Techno - Exploring its Origins, Influences and Sub-Genres

Proto Techno

It is apparent that certain electro-disco and European synth pop productions share with techno a dependence on machine-generated dance rhythms but comparisons are not without contention. Efforts to regress further into the past, in search of antecedents, entails a further regression, to the sequenced electronic music of Raymond Scott, whose "The Rhythm Modulator," "The Bass-Line Generator," and "IBM Probe" are considered early examples of techno-like music.

In a review of Scott's Manhattan Research Inc. compilation album the English newspaper The Independent suggested that Scott's importance lies mainly in his realization of the rhythmic possibilities of electronic music, which laid the foundation for all electro-pop from disco to techno. Another example of early EDM-like music has recently come to light (2008). On a tape, reportedly made in the mid to late 1960s by the original composer of the Dr. Who theme, Delia Derbyshire, is evidence of music virtually indistinguishable from contemporary EDM.

Paul Hartnoll, formerly of the dance group Orbital describes the example as quite amazing and notes that it sounds not unlike something that could be coming out next week on Warp Records. It is also noteworthy that the possible influence of electronic music found in American sci-fi movie soundtracks, such as the work of Louis and Bebe Barron for the film Forbidden Planet, appears to be unconsidered.

Conch Award Won for Commerical of the Year

The telly advert for the VW Golf known as “Enjoy the Everyday” won the award for Commercial of the Year at the Conch Awards. The award, sponsored by Film London, gives a nod to The Jungle Group and Paul Hartnoll for their creative collaboration.

The 2008 Conch Awards: UK Screen Association's Film, Commercial and Television Sound Awards were held on Thursday, September 25 in London, England.

Paul's Latest Production Project

Paul joined producer Flood (Killers/U2) to record Leeds' quartet, The Music's third album which is to be released through Yes Please!/Polydor on June 16 2008. The record titled, Strength In Numbers, is the follow-up to 2004's Welcome To The North, it is not known when the new record will be available stateside.

VW's Golf gets Gob Smacked

Produced in collaboration with Paul, Volkswagen launches its latest ad campaign for their flagship model with a lyrical and visual composition depicting the life of one man and his Golf.

The track for the advert, entitled “Gob Smack”, is made up from the sounds recorded in and around the Golf during the shoot. The music was created from sounds experienced during driving the car, including the car door shutting, driver and passenger exchanges and buskers on the street corner.

Airing on television for eight weeks from April 11 it will also be shown at Independent Cinemas from May 5.

The Everyday ad was developed at DDB, London, by creative directors Graeme Hall and Noah Regan, agency producer Richard Chambers. Filming was shot by director Scott Lyon (Mark Ronson, The Zutons) via Outsider, London, with director of photography John Mathieson, producer Zeno Campbell. Post production was done at The Mill, London. Editor was Art Jones at Speade.

London And Manchester Dates

Paul Hartnoll formerly one half of dance pioneers Orbital, announced two headline UK shows in support of his debut solo album The Ideal Condition. Paul performed at London's Roundhouse on Tuesday, September 4 and Manchester's Bridgewater Hall on Wednesday, September 5.

These dates were one of a series of UK shows for Paul since Orbital disbanded. More photos and larger versions can be viewed on the News page at Loopz.
